Tourists in Bulgaria: What to Do When Your Car Breaks Down — Guide in English and Russian

Step 1 — Safety first, before any phone call

A stopped car in a live lane is the most dangerous place on a motorway, and the rules in Bulgaria are strict about it. Do these four things in the first two minutes:

• Hazard lights on immediately — The moment you feel the car dying, switch on the hazards and start moving towards the hard shoulder while the car still rolls.
• Reflective vest — mandatory in Bulgaria — By law, anyone who steps out of the car on the road must wear a reflective vest. Keep the vests inside the cabin, not in the boot — you must put one on before you get out.
• Warning triangle behind the car — Place the triangle at least 100 metres behind the car on a motorway (30 metres on ordinary roads), so approaching traffic sees you in time.
• Everyone behind the guardrail — Passengers wait behind the safety barrier, uphill or away from traffic — never inside the car, never standing beside it. Only then reach for the phone.
